You’ve seen Who Do
You
Think You Are on TV.
Now find out about your
ancestors. Get started with one of our free
introductory sessions.
- Who are they intended for?
- Beginners. Anyone who is just starting family history
research. No prior experience is assumed.
- What counts as a 'beginner' as I've done some
research?
- You are welcome to participate even if you have
already started your journey, but you will need to accept that some of
the content will be a 'refresher' rather than being new.
- What is covered?
- The process for tracing your ancestors
back in time.
The historic data that lets you do this.
The Internet sites that enable you to access
this data for free
Some of the pitfalls when interpreting the data.
- Keeping records & preserving documents
Each session ends with hand-on when you have the opportunity to put
into
practice what you have heard.
- Is this a course or just one-off?
- This is a single 2 hour session to get you started.
- How much does it cost?
- The session is free. We ask for a 25p
contribution to costs which includes a hand-out.
-
- What do I need to bring?
- Your library membership card. If you have not used your card
for a while it may no longer be valid. You can check by trying to log
in here and if necesary (re)join.
Pencil & paper to make notes, though the hand-out will save you
writing down Internet addresses.
- Will I be able to record what I find in the hands-on?
- Yes. You can make notes, take a photograph of the
screen,
print to the library's printer (standard SCC print charges apply) and
save to a USB memory stick.
- Do I need to prepare for the hands-on?
- We suggest you think of an ancestor who lived in
England or
Wales, was alive in 1910, preferably with a not-too-common surname name
(Smith, Jones, Brown etc are too challenging for your first search) and
about whom you know enough to be able
to recognise them from among others (a few of approx date and place of
birth,
where they may have lived, parents, siblings, as these all help to be
confident
that you have found the right person).
- Is family history research an expensive hobby?
- No. You can get a long way without any cost by
using resourses that are free on the Internet, or in SCC libraries.
- Where and when are the sessions?
- Sessions are held in Bagshot Library at times when it
is
not open to the public and our volunteer leader is available.
This usually means Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday mornings from from 10 -
12
am and Thursday
afternoons from 2 - 4 pm.
Session don't run every week. We will agree a
date with those who wish to attend.
-
- Do I need to book?
- Yes. The group size is very small and booking
is essential.
- How do I book?
- Send an email to family@bagshotvillage.org.uk
with your contact details and an indication as to what days of the week
you could attend.
